Wednesday of Week 34 – Dan 5:1-6,13-14,16-1723-28; Luke 21:12-19
“You have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven.”
The prophet Daniel reminds us of the grave consequences that come from disrespecting what is holy, as seen in the story of King Belshazzar. This event took place during a sacred feast near the temple’s treasury, where, at the king’s command, vessels – once taken by Nebuchadnezzar as spoils of war – were brought out from the temple. It was in this moment that a mysterious hand appeared, writing words on the wall that no one could understand, until Daniel revealed their meaning: The king had committed sacrilege and would face defeat – by the Persians.
Today, we might hesitate to see the effects of wrongdoing as direct punishment from God, yet we must remember that sin always carries consequences. When I wound God through sin, I am also hurting others – and myself. It’s easy to overlook this or convince myself that my sins are insignificant, that they don’t cause real harm, or that others commit far worse. I try to justify my actions, blaming circumstances or other people to ease the guilt. But when the consequences come back to affect me, it’s tempting to rebel and cry out that it’s unfair.
Lord Jesus, You are my strength and my refuge. Help me to face my sins honestly, to take responsibility with courage, and to seek Your forgiveness with a humble heart. May I grow in grace and live in Your peace. Amen.
