Friday of Week 4 – Sirach 47:2-13; Psalm 17:31,47,50-51; Mark 6:14-29
Today, we find ourselves reflecting on two very distinct figures: King David, who “lifted up the horn of his people,” and Herodias, whose dark ambitions even drew her daughter into her web of manipulation. David, the valiant one who “slayed the giant,” drew his strength from the Lord Most High. In stark contrast, Herodias was consumed by her desire for power, intent on eliminating any threats to her reign.
As we ponder our own lives, we might feel our actions pale in comparison to those titans of faith and ambition. Yet the essence of their stories holds a timeless truth. As contemporary Christians, we are called to embody the spirit of David. He was a man who, in every venture, offered heartfelt thanks to the Holy One, expressing his love for the Creator through soulful songs.
When we deviate from this path, it’s all too easy to get tangled in deception, surrendering to fears about what others think, and cultivating a desperate need for control over everything around us. But here’s a gentle reminder: we never truly held the reins of our lives! It’s a humbling realisation, isn’t it? “He indeed is the shield,” the faithful remind us. Yes, it is God who anchors us amid life’s storms.
So, dear Jesus, help us to recognise and genuinely embrace the truth that in choosing You, we are choosing life itself. Because in the grand tapestry of existence, it all boils down to that connection, doesn’t it? Let’s welcome the peace that blooms from the knowledge that we are never alone in our journey!
