Advent, 24 December – 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Luke 1:67-79
O Radiant Dawn, splendour of eternal light, sun of justice; come and enlighten those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death. (Acclamation before the Gospel)
For about ten months, Zechariah was mute, and in a way excluded from the world. Before that, he lacked confidence that he and Elizabeth would still be able to become parents. However, on the eighth day after birth, when family and friends gathered to circumcise and give the child a name, Zechariah – after pronouncing the name “John” – regained speech and was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Guided by the Spirit of God, Zechariah exalted the God of Israel, who is faithful to the covenant and oath he made to Abraham. As Advent come to an end, we also hear the significant words: “because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high.” The Child Jesus is the Light that illuminates everyone. And we are just before His sunrise. May we welcome Him with love into our hearts, our families, our homes. And open ourselves to the peace that He heralds for the whole earth.
