Feast of Saint Kentigern – Isaiah 52:7-10; Luke 5:1-11
Today, as we celebrate the Feast of Saint Kentigern, we are reminded of the awe-inspiring moment in Luke’s Gospel when Jesus instructed Simon Peter to cast out into the deep (Luke 5:1-11). Although Peter had toiled all night without success, he obeyed Christ’s command with faith. What happened next? The nets overflowed with an abundance of fish, far more than he could ever have imagined!
Saint Kentigern, also known as Saint Mungo, mirrors this same spirit of obedience and trust in God’s leading. He journeyed around Scotland with relentless devotion, sowing seeds of the Gospel on what might have seemed unyielding ground. Yet God blessed his efforts just as He did with Peter’s fishing expedition, bringing forth spiritual fruits beyond measure.
When we feel we’ve “fished all night” and have nothing to show for our efforts, Christ gently beckons us to go deeper in faith. Saint Kentigern’s example encourages us to say “yes” to the Lord wholeheartedly. Let’s open our hearts wide today, trusting in Jesus even when our nets seem empty. May we courageously launch out into the deep and discover the rich catch God has in store for those who follow Him in love.
