The Holy Guardian Angels – Job 19:21-27; Ps 26:7-9,13-14; Matthew 18:1-5,10
See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in heaven.
Angels are spiritual beings, invisible, created by God. Messengers of God sent to us. Each of us has received our own spiritual guardian – a Guardian Angel. He helps us reach salvation. It’s a shame that we adults so rarely remember them. Maybe the reason lies in our belief that they are alright for little children? It’s a fact that we adults lack the trust that small children have. And maybe that’s exactly why Jesus today points to children. Because they are able to rely on parents, to trust implicitly, but above all to recognise their dependence on them. The child misses them and doesn’t want to leave them even for a moment. Jesus encourages us to trust, to an attitude of humility and devotion, to a desire to live with Him. God doesn’t leave us alone on this road. He provides personal help. Someone who sees God and looks upon Him. Someone who accompanies me constantly, and yet gazes upon the face of God. His concern is that I reach the purpose of this life, that is, eternal happiness in heaven. How do I use that help that is provided?
On the pages of Holy Scripture, we can see how many times God sends angels to help us. So as to be assured of safely reaching the destination we are encouraged to obedience and to invite the help of angels. On the road await us many dangers, temptations, my weaknesses, defects and compulsions that hinder my steps toward Him. In the Guardian Angel we have help. Let’s remember that often.
