Friday of Week 11 – 2 Kings 11:1-4,9-11,20; Matthew 6:19-23

Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth. It’s not worth it, says Jesus. You won’t take any of this with you.

Is possessing earthly goods an obstacle on the way to God? No, not possession alone, just as poverty, is no guarantee. Recognising your treasure as your own can become such an obstacle.

A treasure, i.e., something most valuable. Something I either possess (and protect) or do not possess (and strive for). Material goods, but also intangible ones – people, relationships, position, power. . .

It doesn’t have to become my light. It’s enough that it becomes a filter through which the light will reach me. Changed. Less clear. Maybe colourful, fascinating, but not true.

If the light in me is darkness. . .

Lord, reveal the “filters” through which I look at You and the world.
