5th Friday in Eastertide – Acts 15:22-31; John 15:12-17

You are my friends, if you do what i command you.

Jesus who is the Lord and Teacher gives commandments on the basis of friendship with Him and not like a master to His servants. Disciples are to love one another because this is the example He gives us. Friendship between Jesus and His disciples grew because He gave them everything He heard from the Father. And they were ready to accept it. Therefore, the apostles are friends of Jesus, if they keep His commandments.
The mutual love to which Jesus calls His disciples becomes the motive of apostolic dynamism and openness to others, because this is how others will know who are His disciples. And so, in today’s world also, it is their hallmark. The love which becomes the motive to offer yourself in the service of God and neighbour. Fraternal love and unity builds the Church and assures her continuous development.
