Feast of Saint Lawrence – 2 Cor 9:6-10; Psalm 111: 1-2,5-9; John 12:24-26
I had barely stopped when he knocked on the car window. “Could you please move the car? They’re delivering furniture in the morning, I wanted to keep clear this spot.” What was there to think about? I drove a few metres further. He thanked me and explained himself. Unnecessarily. After all, it’s a small thing. The joy that comes from being able to show kindness in such situations is a reward many times greater than such a small gesture is worth.
“Thin sowing means thin reaping; the more you sow, the more you reap.” Saint Paul wrote about money, but this truth probably also applies to all the good that a person can give to their neighbour. How many times in my life have I experienced that the good that I showed to someone came back to me multiplied by God’s generosity?
For me, a sinner, one more thing is especially important. “God loves a cheerful giver,” writes Saint Paul. If I willingly and without hesitation help my neighbour in need, maybe God will remember the good I have done when He looks at my guilt?
