Saints Cyril, monk, and Methodius, Bishop – Feast: Acts 13:46-49; Luke 10:1-9
It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
Today, as we celebrate Cyril and Methodius, we remember how these two saints introduced the Gospel to the barbarian Slavs – my ancestors. Paul and Barnabas remind us that the Gospel is a gift for everyone – Jews and pagans alike.
At times, I may mistakenly think my faith elevates me above others: pagans, atheists, or those who have strayed. Yet, both Jesus and the Gospel affirm that even those we consider distant from faith have a place in God’s plan. When I close myself off to God’s call or turn a blind eye to the truth, I risk becoming just like those who rejected Paul and Barnabas.
Sharing the hope that the Holy Spirit inspires within me can feel daunting. I might fear ridicule or worry about looking foolish. Yet, isn’t it worth the risk? Christianity may sometimes seem to be in retreat, but we are assured – through our prayers – that God’s kingdom is near, calling us to live with courage and beauty. Let us embrace that mission. Together, we can share the hope that inspires us, illuminating the world with God’s love.
