Feast of St Mary Magdalene – Song of Songs 3:1-4; John 20:1-2,11-18
Jesus said, ‘Mary!’ She knew him then and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbuni!’ – which means Master (John 20).
Mary Magdalene came to the empty tomb. She did not know or understand yet that Jesus had risen. She was alarmed to discover that Jesus’ body was missing from the tomb. He rewarded her care and great love when He made himself known to her in person. How great the bond between Mary and Jesus must have been if one word was enough for her to recognise her Master.
The very desire to encounter Jesus causes us to notice Him in all things. Seeking Him in various life situations will help you notice His presence in the smallest, everyday matters. Trusting that He is always with us, especially in the most difficult moments, gives rise to the opportunity of recognising Him. When we believe that He wants the best for us, we will long for Him and live at His side. Then, just as He did with Mary Magdalene, He will open our eyes and hearts.
