Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross – Num 21:4-9; Ps 78:1-2,34-38; John 3:13-17

The cross helps understanding

The feast of the Exaltation of the Cross . . . . Today there’s a reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. It is a synthesis of the Cross of Christ. The summit of humiliation (as strange as that sounds) – so that God lift Him up, so that through the resurrection He be exalted.

The cross is obedience. It is to agree that, not I, but God is right. That if He says “do that and don’t avoid it”, it’s not for me to argue with Him. He knows better . . .

It doesn’t matter that we’re in the 21st century, that humanity is so much wiser (but that’s only how it seems) than a couple of centuries earlier. It’s still that case that God always knows better than us. To be obedient to Him is the way to resurrection and exaltation with Christ for ever.

Thy will be done . . . . I’m not always able to discern it in every situation, but in many it’s like this: I know what is good and what is bad. And You love what is good. It is this, Your will, I want to fulfil . . .
