Ash Wednesday – Joel 2:12-18; Ps 50:3-6,12-14,17; 2 Cor 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6,16-18
“Beware of practising your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.”
This verse invites us to reflect deeply on the manner of our faith. At first glance, one might wonder, what about our witness to those around us? Don’t we have a duty to share God’s love with others, especially those who might be struggling in their belief?
Jesus is not discouraging us from bearing witness; rather, He is cautioning us about our motivations. He longs for our acts of piety to come from a place of genuine love, not a desire for recognition or applause. In a world where it’s easy to seek validation from others for our “pious” actions – sometimes even through harsh words directed at those who don’t share our beliefs – true heroism lies in showing love and kindness, even when it’s challenging.
Let’s recognise that we are imperfect beings on a journey towards holiness.
Lord, accept me as I am, wretched though I may feel. Help me act not for the praise of others, but out of love for You, for Your Father, and for the Holy Spirit. Grant me the courage to support my brothers and sisters through prayer, fasting, and sharing generously from what I have.
Together, let’s strive to reflect God’s love in all we do!
