Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena – 1 John 1:5–2:2; Matthew 11:25–30
As we celebrate the Feast of Saint Catherine of Siena, the readings remind us that true light and true rest come not from chasing comfort, wealth, or worldly fame, but from taking up the yoke of Christ. The world around us says, “Relieve yourself of every burden – seek ease, success, a stress‑free life.”
Yet Jesus surprises us: “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me” (Matthew 11:28–29). A yoke, we might protest? Isn’t that just another load to carry? But our Lord’s yoke is different – it is the means by which we learn to love freely, serve joyfully, and trust unshakably in the Father.
Saint Catherine of Siena – our companion in holiness today – understood this deeply. In the fourteenth century, she felt God calling her not only to personal reform and prayer but also to speak courageously to the successor of Peter. In a series of letters to Pope Gregory XI, she urged him to:
- Return to Rome, leaving behind the distractions of Avignon.
- Govern the universal Church with humility, putting Christ alone at her centre.
- Banish corruption and complacency by a spirit of continual conversion.
- Pour out his heart in intercession for unity and holiness among all Christians.
“If you are what you should be,” Catherine wrote, “you will set the whole world ablaze.” Her words still ring true for every age – and in particular for our own time, as the Church looks ahead to the upcoming conclave. Those who will gather in prayer to choose the next Successor of Peter need our support in three ways:
- Prayer – that the Holy Spirit guide their discernment and fill them with Christ’s mind and heart.
- Trust—that we, the faithful, embrace the yoke of Jesus by loving our neighbour, serving the poor, and living in unity.
- Encouragement – that the new Pope boldly pursue reform, charity, and evangelisation in fidelity to the Gospel.
When the Pope and all of us – bishops, priests, religious, and laypeople – make absolute fidelity to Christ our first priority, we discover the very rest our hearts long for. We learn patience from His meekness, compassion from His mercy, and courage from His trust in the Father. United in prayer and purpose, the Church shines with Christ’s peace and joy in every corner of the earth.
Let us pray:
Come, Holy Spirit, kindle in us the same fire that burned in Saint Catherine’s heart. Teach us to welcome Jesus’ yoke with gladness, to place all our hope in God alone, and to work tirelessly for the unity and holiness of His Body. Pour out Your gifts on those who will soon gather in conclave. May they discern Your will and lead the Church in simplicity of heart, reform of life, and love for the poor. Through the intercession of Saint Catherine of Siena, grant us rest in Christ and zeal for His kingdom. Amen.
