14th Sunday – Zech 9:9-10; Psalm 144; Romans 8:9.11-13; Matthew 11:25-30
Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest.
Life in agreement with the will of God doesn’t rely on individual effort but on undertaking it with the gift of grace and the power of the Holy Spirit. Our relationship with God should be based on trust and obedience, and also adoration. By building trust we find in ourselves the strength to courageously face the toil and hardships of life.
Jesus, the Master and Saviour invites us who are toiling and overburdened by so many troubles to come to Him with it all. He promises us rest and support. It doesn’t mean that problems are going to bypass us, but that living through them with Him and devoted to Him they will turn out to be easier to bear. We can then see them in a different, divine light, and to see their meaning. They can teach us the humility so badly needed in relationships with God and other people.
