Scales
We need to weigh others and ourselves on the same scale
Jesus beautifully encapsulates His teachings with the simple principle: “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them. For this is the Law and the Prophets.” It’s a straightforward message that doesn’t require extensive study or the counsel of wise advisors. In essence, it urges us to treat others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Yet, as we observe the world around us, we often encounter a troubling paradox—what I like to call “Kalism.” This mindset suggests that it’s acceptable when harm is done by one group, yet intolerable when the same is done to them. Where has our shared moral compass gone?
It’s a daunting reality, but I also recognise that the temptation towards this double standard can creep into our own hearts. We must remain vigilant, nurturing our consciences and ensuring that our judgment is guided by reason rather than fleeting emotions. In our journey, let us strive to embrace empathy, fostering understanding and respect in all our interactions. Together, let’s awaken our consciences and collectively illuminate the path of compassion.
