Thursday of Week 4 – 1 Kings 2:1-4,10-12; Mark 6:7-13
Faced with the reality of his impending death, David chooses his son Solomon as his successor. He reminds Solomon of something crucial that he would eventually overlook: Israel is God’s chosen people. Their success hinges not on the skill of their leaders but on God’s blessing. Therefore, staying attuned to God and never taking His commands lightly is the key to making wise decisions.
This lesson remains just as relevant today. While our fate may depend somewhat on our cleverness and resourcefulness, ultimately, it is God who holds the reins. Being loyal to Him matters far more than accumulating wealth and power, which can vanish in an instant.
As David tells Solomon, “I am about to go the way of all the earth.” It’s a gentle reminder that none of us can escape death. Whether it knocks on our door after a long illness or shows up unexpectedly, we will all face it.
Focusing solely on our earthly success, while neglecting to cultivate our faith and good deeds for our heavenly future, is quite a misstep. So, let’s make sure we secure not just our present but also our eternity.
