On the side of the poor

Lent, Friday of Week 5 – Jr 20:10-13; Ps 17:2-7; John 10:31-42

Sing to the LORD;
praise the LORD!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.

God truly has a special place in His heart for the poor and those who’ve faced tough times, just like the prophet Jeremiah did. It’s incredible how poverty can free and enrich us, as seen in Jesus’ life. As Pope Francis reminds us in his Lenten Message, “poverty is his way of loving us, his way of being our neighbour.” It’s amazing to think that what really brings us true freedom, happiness, and salvation is the compassion, tenderness, and solidarity found in His love.

Choosing to embrace poverty is really about imitating Christ. He put all His trust in the Father, seeking only His will and glory. This mindset can help us shake off doubts about God’s love, especially during stressful times. Remember, God is always on the side of those who trust Him and hold onto hope. So, when life gets tough, lean into that trust, and you’ll find His love surrounding you like a warm embrace.

I love you, Lord, my strength;
O Lord, my rock, my fortress, my saviour.
My God, my rock where I take refuge;
my shield, my saving strength, my stronghold.
