Faithfulness to God — this is true success in faith

19^th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A – 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a; Romans 9:1-5; Matthew 14:22-33

Pay attention to the signposts

You do not know the way to the destination better than the One who put them there

Elijah was on a spiritual high. He had just defeated the prophets of Baal in a spectacular showdown on Mount Carmel. You would think that would be it, right? Mission accomplished. But no. He soon finds himself running for his life from Queen Jezebel, utterly dejected and ready to give up.

On Mount Horeb, he expects a grand display from God – a mighty wind, an earthquake, a raging fire. But God is not in the noise. He reveals Himself in “a low whisper”, a gentle breeze.

How often are we like Elijah?

• We pour our energy into zealous projects for the faith.
• We expect dramatic, visible results for our efforts.
• We become discouraged when our brilliant ideas aren’t met with thunderous success.

But God’s ways are not our ways. He isn’t in a hurry. He works calmly, often through the quiet, everyday acts of faithfulness. He asked Elijah not for another fire-and-brimstone miracle, but for the simple obedience of anointing new leaders.

Our calling isn’t to orchestrate grand victories; it is to listen for His gentle voice and do His will. Success is not our business; obedience is. The final victory belongs to the Lord.
