“Who are you looking for?”
Three times this question rises at the beginning of today’s Passion. Three times Jesus speaks to the deepest longing of the human heart: our search for meaning, purpose, and truth.
And so the Cross becomes a celebration. The crowning with thorns becomes a celebration. Even mourning becomes a celebration, because in all of it we know that the greatest thing has happened: Christ has given His life for us.
This is a celebration for all who are bruised, beaten, and lost; for all who feel powerless; for all who have reached the wall and cry out endlessly for mercy, for God’s mercy.
The Cross of Jesus whispers to us: do not run away. Persevere. Trust. I AM.
