Second Thursday of Easter – Acts 5:27-33; John 3:31-36
He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way.
Every so often, I realise just how close Jesus truly is: with me in every moment of the day. And yet, too often, I don’t lift my thoughts to Him as I go about my daily tasks — at least, not as faithfully as I should. I can even fail to turn to Him in moments of difficulty, such as when I try to make sense of why 16,584 pregnancies were intentionally ended in Scotland in 2022. In the busyness of ordinary life, I can lose sight of His presence. I forget to look for God’s message in the small, ordinary things, and so I miss the chance to grow deeper in communion with Him.
And yet God created me for more than this life alone. He made me so that, one day, I may share in His divine life. I am here on earth so that I may one day live with Him forever in heaven.
So I have to ask myself: do I trust Jesus only halfway? I pray, I go to the sacraments, but in earthly matters I can still rely too much on myself. It is often in trial and hardship that the truth becomes clear: who am I really depending on? And in that answer, I see both how real my communion with God is, and how deeply He longs to be united with me.
Lord Jesus Christ, fill me with Your Holy Spirit and transform my heart and mind, so that I may choose life — abundant life in You and with You, in loving communion with You. Give me the grace to remember always that You walk with me in every moment, so that I may have the courage and strength to discern good from evil, and to reject all that is false and contrary to Your holy will. Amen.
