22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – Eccl 3:19-21,30-31; Psalm 67:4-7,10-11; Hebr 12:18-19,22-24; Luke 14:1,7-14

For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the man who humbles himself will be exalted. (Luke 14:11)

Whichever side of the table the food is the same.

We like to be noticed, although we don’t make it known too obviously. We feel disappointed when the good we have done goes unnoticed. Somewhere inside we expect it because the good we’ve done needs to be appreciated. We don’t have look too far to know how we feel when someone doesn’t thank us for doing a favour. What also goes on is minimising the achievements of others which then makes our own be seen in a better light. And today, Jesus encourages to be modest, to be humble, to be meek. He says: so as to take the first places don’t push yourself to the front.

God sees us just as we are, He sees our good and our good motivations. And this should be what’s most important for us. There’s no need to prove anything or to pretend before Him. He loves us whoever we are. He accepts us with our brokenness. God measures with a different yardstick; He’s not looking for success but on what’s in our hearts.
