17th Sunday, Year A – 1 Kings 3:5,7-12; Rom 8:28-30; Matthew 13:44-52
Jesus recounts a man who finds hidden treasure and sells all he possesses to secure the field. The Kingdom of God demands such total commitment when encountered.
This reality intersects modern life. A young woman attended Mass routinely but sensed emptiness amid anxiety. At a prayer meeting, the accidental dropping of the consecrated Host disclosed Christ’s intimate presence in the Eucharist. Her outlook shifted. She approached Mass with renewed intent, accepting that a living relationship with Jesus surpassed prior concerns.
Blaise Pascal framed the choice plainly. Devotion to God secures eternal joy if He exists, or a life of purpose if not. Rejection forfeits all should He prove real.
The faithful are therefore summoned to exchange lesser attachments for the surpassing worth of Christ.
Lord Jesus, open our eyes to Your treasure and strengthen our resolve to choose You above all. Amen.
