Monday of Week 20 – Ez 24:15-24; Deut 32:18-21; Matthew 19:16-22
It’s so easy to spend our days wringing our hands, isn’t it? We moan about the media, the “youth of today”, and all those hostile ideologies knocking at the door. If we only see threats and hardships, we’ll end up sinking into a right state of despair – becoming walking adverts for hopelessness.
But there’s another way. We can be like the poet, walking upright “among those turned back and fallen to the dust.” How? By embracing being poor in spirit.
True poverty of spirit isn’t about having a bank balance of zero; it’s about being free from the “stuff” that weighs us down. When we gaze at heaven rather than our grievances, we find a joy that the world just can’t touch. As one witness of faith put it:
“Even if the world took everything from them, it could not take away the joy of having God.”
Why the “poor in spirit” stand out:
- They don’t lament: They know who is ultimately in charge.
- They don’t go away sad: Unlike the Rich Young Man, they let go and leap forward.
- They radiate joy: It is their trademark.
Don’t let the world get you down. Choose joy. Choose Him.
