Lent, Tuesday of Week 5 – Num 21:4-9, John 8:21-30

The serpent in the desert – the embodiment of death and a haunting reminder of sin. Yet, profound transformation lies within its story. Rather than dwelling on despair, we find a beacon of hope. Those who looked upon the serpent were saved, and the same promise resonates in Christ’s words: “Unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” He boldly proclaims, “When you lift up the Son of Man…”

In His dialogue with Nicodemus, Jesus draws a parallel: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” God’s intent is clear – He sent His Son not to condemn, but to save us from our sins.

Our need for rescue is evident, and in our struggle, we must look to the Cross with unwavering hope and gratitude. It is there we find our greatest source of life.

For reflection:

When I gaze upon the Cross, do I see love or judgement? Am I open to the truth that no sin is too great for His healing embrace?

What do you feel about this?
