Easter Second Week – Monday Acts 4:23-31; Ps 2:1-9; John 3:1-8

He came to Jesus by night — Jn 3:3

He came to Him by night. Was it because he feared gossip, wanted to protect his reputation, or worried about what the other Pharisees might think? Or was he simply being cautious, in case this Rabbi was not the One he had been hoping for?

Jesus sees what is hidden in Nicodemus’ heart, and He wants to bring it into the light and change the way he thinks. “You must be born again” — this is what Nicodemus hears from the Master. To be born of the Spirit means to see life anew in the light of Christ, and to move beyond a merely outward knowledge of God.

Nicodemus comes in the dark, yet he allows Jesus to shine into his heart. Later, he will defend Him, and then, with Joseph, bury His body. No longer afraid, he will stand in the full light of the Risen One.

How many such intimate moments have I had with my own Lord? Some happened in the dark too, full of anxiety and fear. And there were also times when I looked with joy upon His risen face. And yet I still lack Nicodemus’ courage — the courage to be made new each day, and to show Jesus not just in words, but in the choices I make and the way I live. In truth, I am still walking in the dark.
